SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 16.94 g, 4 h), circa 480-478. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣVR-ΑΚ-ΟΣ-Ι-ΟΝ Pearl-diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair drawn up at the back, wearing pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right; all within circular incuse. Boehringer 88 (V43/R57). HGC 2, 1306. Randazzo 251-2 (same dies). SNG ANS 22 (same dies). A nicely toned and well struck example. A few light marks and with minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, about extremely fine.
